The email

Each numbered gap is a drop-down on the test. The options and the answers are under the questions below.

Hi Nora, Thanks again for offering to help with my move before I leave for the Yellowknife contract. I'm putting everything from my one-bedroom apartment into storage, including Grandma's old piano, which needs a steady temperature. That means I should rent the gap 1 unit. I did consider the climate-controlled 5 ft × 10 ft unit to save money, but it only holds the contents of gap 2, so it would be far too small. Since I'll be away for exactly six months, I'm going to pay in advance, which means I'm only charged for gap 3 months. That works out to gap 4 for the unit itself, and once the one-time fee is added, I'll pay gap 5 before I go. Could you hold the spare key while I'm away? Daniel

Questions and answer key

  1. 1Gap 1 in the email

    1. A5 ft × 10 ft
    2. ✓10 ft × 10 ft
    3. C10 ft × 15 ft
    4. D5 ft × 5 ft

    Answer: B (10 ft × 10 ft)

The 10 ft × 10 ft unit holds 'Contents of a one-bedroom apartment' and is climate controlled, which the piano needs. The 10 ft × 15 ft is sized for a two-bedroom house, and the smaller units are too small.

  2. 2Gap 2 in the email

    1. Aa few small boxes
    2. ✓a studio apartment
    3. Ca two-bedroom house
    4. Da one-bedroom apartment

    Answer: B (a studio apartment)

The 5 ft × 10 ft row says it holds 'Contents of a studio apartment'. A one-bedroom apartment is what the larger 10 ft × 10 ft unit holds, and a two-bedroom house is for the 10 ft × 15 ft.

  3. 3Gap 3 in the email

    1. Asix
    2. ✓five
    3. Cfour
    4. Dthree

    Answer: B (five)

The note says that if you pay six months in advance 'the sixth month is free', so he pays for five. Six ignores the free month; three is the minimum stay, not the number charged.

  4. 4Gap 4 in the email

    1. ✓$900
    2. B$1,080
    3. C$625
    4. D$1,200

    Answer: A ($900)

Five months at the $180 monthly rate is $900. $1,080 charges all six months; $1,200 uses the $240 rate of the largest unit; $625 uses the $125 rate of the smaller climate-controlled unit.

  5. 5Gap 5 in the email

    1. A$1,105
    2. ✓$925
    3. C$950
    4. D$1,080

    Answer: B ($925)

$900 plus the 'one-time $25 lock and administration fee' gives $925. $1,105 is six full months plus the fee; $1,080 is six full months without the fee; $950 counts the fee twice.

  6. 6What is the smallest unit that is climate controlled?

    1. ✓5 ft × 10 ft
    2. B5 ft × 5 ft
    3. C10 ft × 15 ft
    4. D10 ft × 10 ft

    Answer: A

The 5 ft × 10 ft unit at $125 is the first one marked 'Yes' for climate control. The 5 ft × 5 ft unit is smaller but marked 'No'.

  7. 7Which customers can rent a unit for only one month?

    1. AThose who rent the largest unit
    2. BThose who pay six months in advance
    3. CThose who already have their own lock
    4. ✓Those who rent a unit without climate control

    Answer: D

The 'Minimum Stay' is '1 month' only for the two units marked 'No' for climate control; all climate-controlled units, including the largest, require 3 months. The lock fee and advance payment do not change the minimum stay.

  8. 8Why does Daniel need a climate-controlled unit?

    1. ATo fit everything from a one-bedroom apartment
    2. BTo pay the lowest monthly rate
    3. CTo get a shorter minimum stay
    4. ✓To protect an old piano

    Answer: D

Daniel mentions 'Grandma's old piano, which needs a steady temperature'. Size alone does not require climate control, climate-controlled units cost more, not less, and they have the longer 3-month minimum stay.
