The email

Each numbered gap is a drop-down on the test. The options and the answers are under the questions below.

Hi Yusuf, I finally looked at the winter swim timetable. Leila passed Otter in the fall, so this session she moves up to gap 1. I can't leave the office before 5:30 on weekdays, and you have Saturday mornings free, so she'll have to take the gap 2 class. Sami is four and has never been in a pool, so I think the gap 3 class, where a parent stays in the water with the child, would be best for him. That one starts at gap 4, so you could swim with Sami first and then sit in the stands for Leila's lesson half an hour after his ends. With the second-child discount, the two of them will cost gap 5 altogether, which is fine for our budget. Could you register them online before the deadline? Love, Amira

Questions and answer key

  1. 1Gap 1 in the email

    1. AShark
    2. ✓Dolphin
    3. CSea Star
    4. DOtter

    Answer: B (Dolphin)

The note says children 'move up one level after passing', and Dolphin follows Otter in the table. Otter is the level she already passed, and Shark is two levels up and for ages 9–12.

  2. 2Gap 2 in the email

    1. ✓Saturday 10:00 a.m.
    2. BWednesday 6:00 p.m.
    3. CMonday 5:15 p.m.
    4. DTuesday 4:30 p.m.

    Answer: A (Saturday 10:00 a.m.)

Dolphin runs on Monday at 5:15 p.m. or Saturday at 10:00 a.m.; Amira cannot leave work before 5:30 on weekdays, so only Saturday works. Tuesday and Wednesday are times for Otter and Shark, not Dolphin.

  3. 3Gap 3 in the email

    1. AOtter
    2. ✓Sea Star
    3. CShark
    4. DDolphin

    Answer: B (Sea Star)

Sea Star is the only level marked 'parent in water'. Sami's age (4) also fits Otter, but Otter has no parent in the water, which is what Amira wants.

  4. 4Gap 4 in the email

    1. ✓9:00
    2. B10:00
    3. C5:15
    4. D4:30

    Answer: A (9:00)

The Sea Star time is '9:00–9:30 a.m.', and it ends half an hour before Leila's 10:00 lesson. 10:00 is Leila's own start time; 4:30 and 5:15 are weekday times.

  5. 5Gap 5 in the email

    1. A$176
    2. B$57
    3. ✓$153
    4. D$168

    Answer: C ($153)

Dolphin $96 + Sea Star $72 = $168, minus '$15 off the lower of the two fees' = $153. $168 forgets the discount; $176 adds Dolphin and Otter; $57 is only Sami's discounted fee.

  6. 6Which level is offered at two different times?

    1. AOtter
    2. BSea Star
    3. CShark
    4. ✓Dolphin

    Answer: D

Dolphin appears twice in the table, on Monday at 5:15 p.m. and Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Every other level has a single row.

  7. 7A family registers a 10-year-old in Shark and a 5-year-old in Otter. What is the total fee?

    1. A$97
    2. B$192
    3. ✓$177
    4. D$162

    Answer: C

Shark $112 + Otter $80 = $192, less $15 off the lower fee (Otter) = $177. $192 ignores the second-child discount; $162 takes the discount twice; $97 is the Shark fee less $15 only.

  8. 8Why does Amira suggest that Yusuf take both children on the same day?

    1. ALeila needs a parent in the water with her.
    2. BRegistration for weekday classes has closed.
    3. ✓The two lessons take place one after the other that morning.
    4. DSaturday lessons are cheaper than weekday ones.

    Answer: C

Sea Star ends at 9:30 and Dolphin starts at 10:00 on Saturday, so Yusuf can stay for both. Both Dolphin times cost $96, so Saturday is not cheaper, and only Sea Star requires a parent in the water.
