The email

Each numbered gap is a drop-down on the test. The options and the answers are under the questions below.

Hi Aisha, I've gone through the listings we bookmarked. We need two bedrooms, so Elgin Court is out, and it allows gap 1 anyway, so your dog couldn't come. Rideau Terrace looks lovely, but it isn't free until gap 2, and we have to leave our current place by the end of January. Bank Street has no parking and no pets, so that leaves gap 3, which accepts small dogs. Including utilities and parking for my car, it would cost about gap 4 a month, which is just under our $2,200 limit. When we sign, we'll need to pay gap 5 for the first and last months, so we should both have our share ready. Could you come and see it with me on Saturday afternoon? Jamal

Questions and answer key

  1. 1Gap 1 in the email

    1. ✓cats only
    2. Bno pets
    3. Ccats and small dogs
    4. Da free parking spot

    Answer: A (cats only)

The Pets column for 14 Elgin Court says 'Cats only', so a dog is not allowed. 'No pets' describes Bank Street and Somerset Lane, and 'cats and small dogs' would have allowed the dog.

  2. 2Gap 2 in the email

    1. Athe end of January
    2. BFebruary 1
    3. ✓March 1
    4. Dthe end of the lease

    Answer: C (March 1)

The note says '9 Rideau Terrace is available from March 1'. February 1 is the date for all the other units, which is why the move-in date is a problem.

  3. 3Gap 3 in the email

    1. ✓57 Carling Avenue
    2. B14 Elgin Court
    3. C3 Somerset Lane
    4. D220 Bank Street

    Answer: A (57 Carling Avenue)

Carling Avenue is the remaining two-bedroom unit, available February 1, and allows 'Cats and small dogs'. Somerset Lane allows 'No pets' and is over budget; Bank Street and Elgin Court have already been ruled out.

  4. 4Gap 4 in the email

    1. A$1,950
    2. B$2,100
    3. C$2,250
    4. ✓$2,150

    Answer: D ($2,150)

Rent $1,950 + utilities about $150 + parking $50 = $2,150. $1,950 is the rent alone, $2,100 is Bank Street's rent, and $2,250 is the rent at Rideau Terrace.

  5. 5Gap 5 in the email

    1. A$1,950
    2. B$4,200
    3. C$4,300
    4. ✓$3,900

    Answer: D ($3,900)

'First and last month's rent' is two months of rent: 2 × $1,950 = $3,900. $1,950 is one month; $4,300 doubles the full monthly cost including utilities and parking; $4,200 is two months at Bank Street.

  6. 6Which apartments include both utilities and a free parking spot?

    1. A14 Elgin Court and 9 Rideau Terrace
    2. B57 Carling Avenue and 3 Somerset Lane
    3. ✓9 Rideau Terrace and 3 Somerset Lane
    4. D220 Bank Street and 57 Carling Avenue

    Answer: C

Only Rideau Terrace and Somerset Lane show 'Included' for utilities and '1 spot free' for parking. Elgin Court charges $75 for parking, and Carling Avenue and Bank Street charge extra for utilities.

  7. 7How much would a tenant at 14 Elgin Court pay in one year for rent and parking?

    1. A$19,800
    2. B$21,600
    3. C$19,875
    4. ✓$20,700

    Answer: D

    Monthly rent $1,650 + parking $75 = $1,725, and 12 × $1,725 = $20,700. $19,800 is rent only; $19,875 adds parking for just one month; $21,600 would need a monthly cost of $1,800.

  8. 8Why would 3 Somerset Lane not suit Aisha?

    1. AUtilities cost extra.
    2. BIt has no parking.
    3. CIt is not available on February 1.
    4. ✓It does not allow pets.

    Answer: D

Somerset Lane's Pets column says 'No pets', and Aisha has a dog. It has '1 spot free', utilities are 'Included', and it is available from February 1 like every unit except Rideau Terrace.
