The email

Each numbered gap is a drop-down on the test. The options and the answers are under the questions below.

Hi Hannah, I've read through the after-school options for Ben. Since we both finish work at 5:30 every weekday and need about fifteen minutes to get to the school, he needs care until at least 5:45. Of the afternoon programs, that rules out the Homework Club, which ends at 5:00, and the gap 1, which ends half an hour later. Of the two programs that run until 6:00, I'd prefer gap 2, because Ben would stay inside the school instead of walking several blocks in January. It costs gap 3 a month, more than the other one, but I think it's worth it. If Clara joins the same program when she starts kindergarten next year, her fee would be gap 4. We'll need to be on time, though: arriving at 6:15 would cost us gap 5 extra. Let's talk tonight and sign him up this week. Oliver

Questions and answer key

  1. 1Gap 1 in the email

    1. AActive Kids
    2. ✓Arts Studio
    3. CEarly Bird
    4. DFull Care

    Answer: B (Arts Studio)

Arts Studio ends at '5:30 p.m.', half an hour after the Homework Club's 5:00 close, so it cannot cover care until 5:45. Active Kids and Full Care run to 6:00, and Early Bird is a morning program, not an afternoon one.

  2. 2Gap 2 in the email

    1. ✓Full Care
    2. BActive Kids
    3. CEarly Bird
    4. DHomework Club

    Answer: A (Full Care)

Full Care runs until 6:00 and is held in the 'School gym', while Active Kids also runs until 6:00 but its children are walked to the rec centre. Homework Club ends at 5:00.

  3. 3Gap 3 in the email

    1. A$110
    2. B$180
    3. C$320
    4. ✓$365

    Answer: D ($365)

The Full Care 'Monthly Fee' is $365, which is more than the $320 for Active Kids, as Oliver says. $180 and $110 are the Homework Club and Early Bird fees.

  4. 4Gap 4 in the email

    1. ✓$328.50
    2. B$288
    3. C$36.50
    4. D$365

    Answer: A ($328.50)

A second child gets '10% off the monthly fee': $365 − $36.50 = $328.50. $365 ignores the discount, $36.50 is only the discount itself, and $288 is 10% off the Active Kids fee.

  5. 5Gap 5 in the email

    1. A$1
    2. B$6
    3. C$30
    4. ✓$15

    Answer: D ($15)

Closing time is 6:00 p.m. and late pick-up is '$1 per minute', so 15 minutes late costs $15. $1 is the per-minute rate only, and $30 doubles the charge.

  6. 6Which program does not include a snack or meal?

    1. AHomework Club
    2. BEarly Bird
    3. ✓Arts Studio
    4. DActive Kids

    Answer: C

Arts Studio is the only program with 'No' in the Snack column. Early Bird provides 'Breakfast', and the others say 'Yes'.

  7. 7How much more per month does Full Care cost than Active Kids?

    1. A$185
    2. ✓$45
    3. C$35
    4. D$55

    Answer: B

Full Care is $365 and Active Kids $320, a difference of $45. $185 is the difference between Full Care and the Homework Club.

  8. 8What can be inferred about the Early Bird program?

    1. AIt costs more than the Homework Club.
    2. BIt replaces the afternoon programs.
    3. CIt is offered only to second children.
    4. ✓It is for children who need care before classes start.

    Answer: D

Early Bird runs '7:30–8:30 a.m.' and serves breakfast, so it is morning care before school. At $110 it is cheaper than the $180 Homework Club, and the 10% sibling discount has nothing to do with it.
