The email

Each numbered gap is a drop-down on the test. The options and the answers are under the questions below.

Hi Lena, I checked the prices at Northside Auto Care. Our winter tires are already on their own rims, but the car shook on the highway last winter, so this time we need balancing as well. We also have no room in the garage for the summer set, and we'll want it put back on in April, so the gap 1 makes the most sense. Since it's only October 20, if I book online today it will cost gap 2 instead of the regular price, and our car's 16-inch wheels mean no extra charge. The appointment should take about gap 3. I was hoping to go on a Saturday, but that's gap 4 with this package, so could you drop the car off on a weekday morning? By the way, your brother's SUV has 19-inch wheels, so if he books the same deal online this week he'll pay gap 5. Thanks, Marco

Questions and answer key

  1. 1Gap 1 in the email

    1. ABasic Swap
    2. ✓Full Season Package
    3. CSwap + Balance
    4. DTire Storage

    Answer: B (Full Season Package)

Marco needs balancing, storage for the summer set and a spring swap; only the Full Season Package includes 'Swap + Balance, storage, and the spring swap'. Swap + Balance alone has no storage, and Tire Storage alone does not change the tires.

  2. 2Gap 2 in the email

    1. A$185
    2. ✓$170
    3. C$80
    4. D$210

    Answer: B ($170)

Booking online on October 20 is 'before October 31', so the early price of $170 applies, and 16-inch wheels add nothing. $210 is the regular price; $185 wrongly adds the $15 large-wheel charge; $80 is the early price of Swap + Balance only.

  3. 3Gap 3 in the email

    1. A15 minutes
    2. Ban hour
    3. C30 minutes
    4. ✓45 minutes

    Answer: D (45 minutes)

The 'Time Needed' for the Full Season Package is '45 min'. 30 minutes is the Basic Swap and an hour is Mount on New Rims; 15 is the surcharge in dollars, not a time.

  4. 4Gap 4 in the email

    1. Aincluded
    2. Brequired
    3. Ccheaper
    4. ✓not possible

    Answer: D (not possible)

The note says 'Saturday appointments are offered for the Basic Swap only', so a Saturday is not possible for the package, which is why Marco asks for a weekday. Nothing suggests Saturdays are cheaper or included.

  5. 5Gap 5 in the email

    1. ✓$185
    2. B$100
    3. C$225
    4. D$170

    Answer: A ($185)

The brother also books online before October 31, so the early $170 applies, and 19-inch wheels are '18-inch or larger', which 'add a flat $15': $170 + $15 = $185. $225 uses the regular $210; $170 ignores the surcharge; $100 is the early price for new rims.

  6. 6Which service takes the longest to complete?

    1. ✓Mount on New Rims
    2. BBasic Swap
    3. CSwap + Balance
    4. DFull Season Package

    Answer: A

Mount on New Rims is listed at '1 hour', longer than any other service. Swap + Balance and the Full Season Package take 45 minutes, and the Basic Swap 30 minutes.

  7. 7How much does a customer save by booking Swap + Balance online before October 31?

    1. A$20
    2. ✓$15
    3. C$40
    4. D$10

    Answer: B

Swap + Balance is $95 regular and $80 early, so the saving is $95 − $80 = $15. $10 is the saving on the Basic Swap and $20 the saving on new rims; $40 is the saving on the Full Season Package.

  8. 8Why does Marco ask Lena to take the car in on a weekday?

    1. AWeekday appointments are cheaper.
    2. BThe shop is closed on Saturdays.
    3. ✓Saturday bookings are limited to the Basic Swap.
    4. DThe package takes too long for a Saturday.

    Answer: C

The note says Saturday appointments are 'for the Basic Swap only', and Marco has chosen the package. The table shows no weekday discount, and the shop is open on Saturdays for one service, so it is not closed.
