CELPIP Writing Task 2 · Responding to Survey Questions · question 3 of 15

Library Evening or Sunday Hours

A CELPIP Writing Task 2 practice question (Responding to Survey Questions), with a model answer below. No sign-up needed. Read the task, then write 150–200 words in 26 minutes, as you would on the test.

The task

The public library in your town can afford to add ten more opening hours each week. The library board wants to know how residents would like these extra hours to be used. Choose the option you prefer and explain the reasons for your choice. Write about 150-200 words. Option A: Stay open until 8:00 p.m. on weekdays instead of closing at 6:00 p.m. Option B: Open on Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., when the library is now closed.

A simple way to build your answer

  1. Explain who cannot use the library under the current hours.
  2. Give an example of a real activity that needs the added time, such as studying or a workshop.
  3. Keep your tone polite and constructive, since the survey comes from a public board.

I would choose Option A, keeping the library open until 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, because it would serve the people who are shut out by the current schedule. At the moment, the doors close at six, right when most working adults are just leaving their jobs. I work at a warehouse until 5:30, and by the time I park, I usually have about fifteen minutes to return books. Evening hours would finally let people like me browse properly, use the computers, or join a book club after dinner. Students would benefit as well. Many high school and college students do not have a quiet place to study at home, especially in crowded apartments. Two extra hours each evening, five days a week, would give them a calm, heated space during the exam season in December and April. Sunday hours would certainly be pleasant, and families might enjoy weekend visits. However, Saturday already gives most people a chance to come, whereas weekday evenings are currently not available at all. For these reasons, Option A would make the library useful to a much wider group of residents.
