Later School Start Time
A CELPIP Writing Task 2 practice question (Responding to Survey Questions), with a model answer below. No sign-up needed. Read the task, then write 150–200 words in 26 minutes, as you would on the test.
The task
The local school board is considering changes to the daily schedule at secondary schools next year. It has sent a survey to parents and students asking which schedule they would support. Choose the option you prefer and explain the reasons for your choice. Write about 150-200 words. Option A: Start classes at 9:30 a.m. instead of 8:15 a.m., with the day ending at 4:15 p.m. Option B: Keep the 8:15 a.m. start, and add a supervised study hall from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
- Choose Option A or Option B.
- Explain the reasons for your choice with details and examples.
- Length
- 150–200 words
- Time
- 26 minutes

A simple way to build your answer
- Think about the whole family's day, not only the student's sleep.
- Mention activities that depend on the end time, such as jobs, sports or caring for siblings.
- Show you know the argument for the other option before explaining your concern.

186 words · no sign-upI would support Option B, keeping the current start time and adding a supervised study hall in the afternoon. The first reason is that a later finish would disrupt far more than school. Many teenagers in our community have part-time jobs that begin at 4:30, and others pick up younger brothers and sisters from elementary school. If classes ended at 4:15, these students would have to choose between their responsibilities and their education. Sports teams would also lose daylight for practice in November and December, when it gets dark before five. My second reason is that the study hall solves a problem families actually have. My son often struggles with math homework, and neither my husband nor I gets home before six. A quiet room with a teacher available until 5:00 would give him a place to ask questions instead of giving up. I know that research suggests teenagers need more sleep, and I take that seriously. Still, families can encourage earlier bedtimes, while they cannot easily rearrange work shifts. Overall, Option B improves support for students without upsetting the routines that many households rely on.
Why this answer works
- Each paragraph has a clear focus: the cost of a later finish, then the benefit of the study hall.
- Concrete local details, like 4:30 job shifts and early winter darkness, make the reasons persuasive.
- The concession about teenage sleep is handled with a precise contrast in the final body sentence.
