The task
Your company wants to offer staff more flexibility in their working schedule. The human resources department has sent a survey asking employees to choose between two options. Choose the option you prefer and explain the reasons for your choice. Write about 150-200 words. Option A: Work four ten-hour days each week, with every Friday off. Option B: Work five eight-hour days, but choose any start time between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m.
- Choose Option A or Option B.
- Explain the reasons for your choice with details and examples.

A simple way to build your answer

190 words · no sign-upI would choose Option A, the four-day week, because a full day off every Friday would make a bigger difference to staff than a flexible start time. The first reason is that a three-day weekend gives people real time to rest and handle personal matters. At the moment, I book medical appointments, car repairs and meetings with my children's teachers during my lunch break, and I am always rushing back. With Fridays free, I could take care of these tasks without leaving work early or using vacation days. The second reason is commuting. Working one fewer day means one fewer round trip, which saves both time and money. For me, that is roughly ninety minutes and twenty dollars every week, and over a year it adds up considerably. It would also reduce our company's parking pressure. I understand that ten-hour days can be tiring, and some colleagues with young children might struggle with them. To manage this, the company could allow a short afternoon break and let teams cover each other on Fridays for urgent client requests. All things considered, Option A would improve both our well-being and our motivation.
Why this answer works
- Specific personal tasks like medical appointments and car repairs show how the free day would be used.
- The commuting reason uses exact figures, ninety minutes and twenty dollars a week, to strengthen the point.
- Rather than ignoring the weakness of long days, it proposes a practical solution, showing mature reasoning.
