The email

Each numbered gap is a drop-down on the test. The options and the answers are under the questions below.

Hi Kwame, HR sent the dental plan options today, and I have to choose by Friday. Since Kofi's dentist says he'll need braces next spring, we can rule out Bronze and Silver because they gap 1. That leaves Gold and Platinum. We agreed to spend no more than $70 a month, so for the whole family we should take gap 2, which costs gap 3 a month. The braces quote is $6,000, and although the plan pays half, there is a lifetime limit, so it would cover only gap 4. That means we'd still have to pay gap 5 ourselves, so we should start putting a little aside each month. Remember that once we switch, we're locked in for two years, so tell me tonight if you see a problem. Grace

Questions and answer key

  1. 1Gap 1 in the email

    1. Acost too much
    2. Bonly cover check-ups
    3. Care for single employees
    4. ✓don't cover braces

    Answer: D (don't cover braces)

Both Bronze and Silver say 'Not covered' under Braces (Orthodontics). They are the two cheapest plans, so 'cost too much' is wrong, and both also cover fillings and offer family prices.

  2. 2Gap 2 in the email

    1. ABronze
    2. BPlatinum
    3. ✓Gold
    4. DSilver

    Answer: C (Gold)

Platinum's family cost is $95, over the $70 limit, while Gold's is $65. Silver and Bronze were already ruled out because they do not cover braces.

  3. 3Gap 3 in the email

    1. A$42
    2. B$95
    3. ✓$65
    4. D$30

    Answer: C ($65)

Gold's 'Monthly Cost (Family)' is $65. $30 is Gold's single rate, $95 is the Platinum family rate, and $42 the Silver family rate.

  4. 4Gap 4 in the email

    1. ✓$2,000
    2. B$3,500
    3. C$3,000
    4. D$6,000

    Answer: A ($2,000)

Half of $6,000 is $3,000, but Gold pays '50%, up to $2,000 lifetime', so it covers $2,000. $3,000 ignores the limit, and $3,500 is the Platinum limit.

  5. 5Gap 5 in the email

    1. A$3,000
    2. B$2,500
    3. ✓$4,000
    4. D$6,000

    Answer: C ($4,000)

$6,000 minus the $2,000 the plan pays leaves $4,000. $3,000 assumes the plan pays a full half; $2,500 is the balance under Platinum; $6,000 assumes no coverage at all.

  6. 6Which plan pays the largest share of the cost of a filling?

    1. ASilver
    2. BGold
    3. ✓Platinum
    4. DBronze

    Answer: C

Under 'Fillings & Repairs', Platinum pays 90%, more than Gold (80%), Silver (70%) or Bronze (50%).

  7. 7Under the Platinum plan, how much of a $6,000 braces bill would be paid?

    1. ✓$3,500
    2. B$3,000
    3. C$3,600
    4. D$2,400

    Answer: A

60% of $6,000 is $3,600, but Platinum's lifetime limit is $3,500, so the plan pays $3,500. $3,600 ignores the limit; $3,000 is 50%; $2,400 is what the family would pay under the uncapped 60%.

  8. 8Which family member could NOT have braces covered under any plan?

    1. AA 15-year-old daughter
    2. ✓A 20-year-old daughter
    3. CAn 18-year-old son
    4. DA 12-year-old son

    Answer: B

The note says orthodontic coverage 'applies only to dependants under 19', so a 20-year-old is excluded. An 18-year-old is still under 19 and can be covered.
