The email

Each numbered gap is a drop-down on the test. The options and the answers are under the questions below.

Hi Wei, I picked up the brochure from the driving school near my office. Because you want Lucas to get the course certificate so his insurance is lower, he has to take either the Beginner Certificate or the gap 1 package. The Beginner Certificate is $795, but it doesn't include a car for the road test, and since your car is too big for him to handle, adding the school car would bring it to gap 2. Beginner Plus costs gap 3 and gives him gap 4 in-car hours, with the road-test car already included. That's only gap 5 more than the other option with the car added, so I think Beginner Plus is the better deal. The next classroom course starts on the first Monday of December, so you'd need to register soon. Mei

Questions and answer key

  1. 1Gap 1 in the email

    1. ARefresher
    2. BStarter
    3. ✓Beginner Plus
    4. DSingle Lesson

    Answer: C (Beginner Plus)

The note says 'Only the Beginner Certificate and Beginner Plus packages lead to the approved course certificate.' The Refresher includes a road-test car but no certificate, and the Starter and Single Lesson have no classroom hours.

  2. 2Gap 2 in the email

    1. A$945
    2. B$1,065
    3. ✓$915
    4. D$795

    Answer: C ($915)

$795 plus '$120 when it is not included' is $915. $795 leaves out the car; $945 is the Beginner Plus price; $1,065 wrongly adds $120 to Beginner Plus.

  3. 3Gap 3 in the email

    1. A$370
    2. ✓$945
    3. C$915
    4. D$795

    Answer: B ($945)

The Price column for Beginner Plus is $945. $795 is the Beginner Certificate, $370 the Refresher, and $915 the Beginner Certificate with a school car added.

  4. 4Gap 4 in the email

    1. ✓twelve
    2. Bten
    3. Ctwenty
    4. Dsix

    Answer: A (twelve)

Beginner Plus lists 12 in-car hours. Ten is the Beginner Certificate figure, six the Refresher, and twenty is the number of classroom hours, not in-car hours.

  5. 5Gap 5 in the email

    1. ✓$30
    2. B$120
    3. C$50
    4. D$150

    Answer: A ($30)

$945 − $915 = $30. $150 compares Beginner Plus with the Beginner Certificate without the car, and $120 is the road-test car fee itself.

  6. 6Which package has the lowest price per in-car hour?

    1. ASingle Lesson
    2. ✓Refresher
    3. CBeginner Plus
    4. DStarter

    Answer: B

Refresher: $370 ÷ 6 is about $62 an hour, lower than Starter ($65), Single Lesson ($70) or Beginner Plus (about $79). The Starter is cheaper overall but not per hour.

  7. 7How much would a student pay for the Starter package plus a school car for the road test?

    1. A$260
    2. B$330
    3. C$370
    4. ✓$380

    Answer: D

The Starter costs $260 and does not include the car, so $260 + $120 = $380. $370 is the Refresher price, and $330 adds a single $70 lesson instead of the car fee.

  8. 8Why does Mei recommend a package with classroom hours?

    1. ✓Only those packages give the certificate that may lower insurance.
    2. BClassroom packages always include a road-test car.
    3. CLucas has already finished his in-car practice.
    4. DThose packages are the cheapest per hour.

    Answer: A

Mei says Wei wants the certificate 'so his insurance is lower', and the note says only the two packages with classroom hours lead to it. The Beginner Certificate does not include a road-test car, so 'always include' is wrong.
