I would choose Option B, an individual allowance for each employee, because people in our company have very different training needs. My first reason is that a single workshop cannot suit everyone. Our office includes accountants, designers, customer service staff and technicians, and a session on leadership or time management may be useful for some of them but irrelevant for others. Last year, we all attended a full-day workshop on presentation skills, although half of the team never presents. My second reason is motivation. When employees choose their own learning, they are much more likely to take it seriously. With $800, I would enrol in an evening course on data analysis at the local college, which would help me prepare monthly reports more quickly. A colleague of mine wants to earn a first-aid certificate, which would also benefit the whole office. In-house workshops do build team spirit and are easier to organize. To make sure the allowance is used responsibly, the company could ask staff to submit a short request explaining how each course relates to their job. Overall, Option B would give the company better value for its training budget.
