The first time I really had to speak in public was at my best friend's wedding in Kelowna, where I was the maid of honour. I had written my speech weeks before, but the night before the wedding I was so nervous that I could barely sleep. When it was my turn, my hands were shaking, and I forgot the first line completely. So I just laughed and said, 'Sorry, I've known her for twenty years and I still don't know where to start.' Everyone laughed, and that broke the tension. After that I relaxed and told a funny story about our first camping trip together. At the end, my friend was crying and hugged me. I learned that people don't expect you to be perfect; they just want you to be genuine.
