Jasmine: So the centre on Elgin Street called back today. They have a spot for Leo starting in September, but we have to confirm by Friday or it goes to the next family. Daniel: Friday? Wow. Okay. And that's the one near your office, right? Jasmine: Five minutes' walk. I could drop him off on my way in and even visit at lunch. And it's licensed, so it's part of the government program. We'd pay about twenty-two dollars a day. Daniel: That's a lot less than I expected. But here's my worry. You're working from home two days a week now. On those days, someone's driving him downtown and back in rush hour. That's forty minutes each way. Jasmine: Hmm, I hadn't really counted that. What about the home daycare on our street? The one Priyanka's son goes to? Daniel: Right, Hana's place. Four kids at most, she's been doing it for twelve years, and Priyanka says her son loves it. It's sixty dollars a day, though, because she's not in the program. Jasmine: Sixty. So that's close to triple. Over a year that's, what, nine thousand more? Daniel: Something like that. But think about the mornings. I could walk him over in two minutes before I leave for the plant, and pick him up at five. You wouldn't have to drive at all. Jasmine: But your shifts change every few months. Remember last winter when you were on seven to three? Then I'd be doing the drop-off anyway. Daniel: Okay, that's fair. Still, small groups... he's only fourteen months. I like the idea of four kids instead of fifteen. Jasmine: The centre has one teacher for every five toddlers, so it's not like he'd be lost. And when he's older, they have a kindergarten prep program. Daniel: Hmm. What if we take the centre spot now, since it might not come back, and keep Hana as our backup? She said she'd have an opening in January. Jasmine: That works for me. If the drive on my home days turns out to be awful, we switch in January. Daniel: And we'll have saved a few thousand by then anyway. Jasmine: Exactly. I'll call Elgin tomorrow morning and confirm, and you let Hana know we'd like to be on her list for January. Daniel: Will do. And I'll ask my supervisor if I can stay on day shifts through the winter.

Questions and answer key

  1. 1What are the speakers mainly discussing?

    1. AWhether Jasmine should work from home
    2. BHow to change Daniel's work shifts
    3. CWhere to buy a home closer to downtown
    4. ✓Which daycare their son should attend

    Answer: D

The conversation compares "the centre on Elgin Street" and "the home daycare on our street" for Leo. Shifts and working from home are factors in that choice.

  2. 2By when must they confirm the spot at the centre?

    1. ABy tomorrow morning
    2. BBy September
    3. ✓By Friday
    4. DBy January

    Answer: C

Jasmine says "we have to confirm by Friday." September is the start date, and January is when the home daycare has an opening.

  3. 3What is Daniel's concern about the centre?

    1. AThe daily cost is too high
    2. ✓The long drive on days Jasmine works from home
    3. CThere are too many children per teacher
    4. DIt is not a licensed daycare

    Answer: B

Daniel says on her home days "someone's driving him downtown and back in rush hour." He says the price is "a lot less than I expected," and the centre is licensed.

  4. 4How much does the home daycare cost?

    1. A$22 a day
    2. B$40 a day
    3. C$50 a day
    4. ✓$60 a day

    Answer: D

Daniel says "It's sixty dollars a day." Twenty-two dollars is the centre's price, and forty is the number of minutes for the drive.

  5. 5Jasmine mentions Daniel's changing shifts to suggest that ___.

    1. ✓Daniel may not always be able to do the morning drop-off
    2. BDaniel may lose his job at the plant
    3. Cthe home daycare closes too early
    4. Dthe centre opens too late in the morning

    Answer: A

She reminds him that when he was on seven to three, "Then I'd be doing the drop-off anyway," so his plan to walk Leo over may not always work. Nothing is said about Daniel losing his job or about opening hours.

  6. 6What does Daniel like most about the home daycare?

    1. ✓The small number of children
    2. BIts kindergarten prep program
    3. CIts lower price
    4. DIts location near Jasmine's office

    Answer: A

Daniel says "I like the idea of four kids instead of fifteen." The kindergarten program and the location near the office belong to the centre, and the home daycare costs more.

  7. 7According to Jasmine, the centre has ___.

    1. Aone adult for every four toddlers
    2. ✓one teacher for every five toddlers
    3. Cone teacher for fifteen toddlers
    4. Dtwo teachers for every five toddlers

    Answer: B

Jasmine says "one teacher for every five toddlers." Four children is the maximum at Hana's home daycare.

  8. 8What do the speakers decide?

    1. ASend Leo to the home daycare in September
    2. BWait until January before choosing
    3. ✓Take the centre spot and keep the home daycare as a backup
    4. DKeep Leo at home while Daniel changes shifts

    Answer: C

Daniel suggests "we take the centre spot now... and keep Hana as our backup," and Jasmine agrees. They may switch in January only if the drive is too hard.
