Articles: a, an, the, and no article
The single most common error for non-native speakers. Master when to use a/an, the, or nothing — and lift your Readability score.
Use "a/an" the first time you mention a singular countable noun, "the" once it's specific or already known, and no article for plurals or uncountable nouns in general. Example: "I bought a car. The car is silver." Getting this right fixes one of the most common errors and directly lifts your Readability score.
- How do I choose between "a" and "an"?
- Go by pronunciation, not spelling: use "an" before a vowel sound and "a" before a consonant sound. That's why it's "a university" (sounds like "yoo") but "an hour" (silent h).
- Why did the lesson use "a" then "the" for the same car?
- The first mention ("a car") introduces new information, and the second mention ("the car") refers back to that same, now-known car — a classic first-mention/second-mention pattern.
- Do words like "home," "work," and "school" need an article?
- Usually no — phrases like "I went home" or "She is at work" take no article, while a job or role after "be" does need one, as in "I am a teacher."
- 1.Use a/an for a singular countable noun mentioned for the FIRST time or in general: "I saw a dog."
- 2.Use the when the noun is SPECIFIC or already known: "The dog was barking." (the one I just mentioned)
- 3.Use no article for plurals and uncountable nouns spoken about in general: "Cats are independent." "Water is essential."
- 4.a before a consonant SOUND (a university), an before a vowel SOUND (an hour) — go by sound, not spelling.
The core idea
Articles tell the reader whether a noun is general or specific, and new or known.
- a / an — one, non-specific, often new information:
- "I need a pen." (any pen)
- the — specific, or already known to the reader:
- "Can I borrow the pen on your desk?" (that specific pen)
- no article (zero) — plural or uncountable nouns talked about in general:
- "Dogs are loyal." "Honesty matters."
First mention vs. second mention
A classic pattern: introduce with a, then refer back with the.
"I bought a car last week. The car is silver."
The first time, the car is new information (a); after that, it is known (the).
a or an? Listen to the sound
Use an before a vowel sound, a before a consonant sound — judged by pronunciation, not the letter:
"a university" (sounds like "yoo"), "an hour" (the h is silent), "an honest answer."
