Key strategies
  • 1.Run your CELPIP email or survey response through the four official rubric areas—Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability, Task Fulfillment—before you submit it.
  • 2.Check off every bullet point in the Task 1 or Task 2 prompt one by one, because completeness is part of Task Fulfillment.
  • 3.Match your email's tone to the recipient named in the prompt—formal for a manager or office, semi-formal for a colleague, informal for a friend—with a different opening and closing line for each.
  • 4.Write 150–200 words for each task and stay well inside the 27-minute Task 1 and 26-minute Task 2 limits so you have minutes left to proofread.
  • 5.Treat any AI or self-check score as a rough practice estimate only, since real CELPIP Writing is scored by trained human raters.
  • 6.Follow a plan-write-proofread split (about 4–5 minutes planning, most of the time writing, 2–3 minutes proofreading) every time you practice to build exam timing habits.

There is no official "CELPIP writing checker" tool from the test maker. The closest thing that actually helps is self-checking your Task 1 email or Task 2 survey response against the four Writing dimensions raters use — Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability, and Task Fulfillment — then revising before you submit. The checklist below takes about 5 minutes per response.

Check your writing: the 5-minute self-check

Read your draft once for each rubric area in turn: (1) Content/Coherence — did you answer everything asked, in a logical order? (2) Vocabulary — any word repeated three or more times? (3) Readability — any sentence longer than 25 words or missing a linking word? (4) Task Fulfillment — right tone, right word count, nothing skipped? Mark problems in the margin, then rewrite only the flagged lines.

What CELPIP Writing tests

CELPIP Writing has two tasks totalling 53 minutes. Task 1 (Writing an Email) gives you 27 minutes to write 150–200 words responding to an everyday situation, usually covering about three required points. Task 2 (Responding to Survey Questions) gives you 26 minutes to write 150–200 words choosing one of two options and justifying it with reasons.

The four rubric areas

  • Content/Coherence: number and quality of ideas, logical organization, supporting detail. Weak: ideas listed with no order. Strong: one idea per paragraph, each backed by an example.
  • Vocabulary: word choice, range, precision. Weak: "good," "bad," "very" repeated. Strong: varied, accurate words matched to context.
  • Readability: paragraphing, connectors, grammar, spelling, punctuation. Weak: one long run-on paragraph. Strong: short paragraphs linked with "however," "as a result," "in addition."
  • Task Fulfillment: relevance, completeness, tone, word count. Weak: 110 words, informal tone to a manager. Strong: 170 words, every bullet addressed, consistent professional tone.

Before-and-after: Task 1 email

Original: "Hi, I want tell you my internet not work since 3 days. Please fix fast thanks." Revised: "Dear Customer Service Team, I am writing to report that my internet service has not been working for three days. I would appreciate a technician visit as soon as possible." Why: fixes verb tense ("has not been working"), adds a formal opening for a company recipient, and states the request clearly — all Task Fulfillment and Readability fixes.

Before-and-after: Task 2 survey response

Original: "I think online shopping is better. It is good and fast. Many people like it too." Revised: "I prefer online shopping to in-store shopping for two reasons. First, it saves time because I can order from home at any hour. Second, prices are often lower online due to reduced overhead costs. In conclusion, convenience and cost make online shopping my choice." Why: adds a clear opinion sentence, two distinct supported reasons, and a conclusion — fixing Content/Coherence and Vocabulary.

Common errors a checker should catch

Tone mismatch (informal words to a formal recipient), missing a required bullet point, the same adjective repeated, run-on sentences without punctuation, overused linkers like "also, also, also," and answers padded to reach the word count without new content.

How accurate is any writing checker?

CELPIP results come from trained human raters scoring against official performance standards, not software. Any AI or self-rated score is a rough estimate of strengths and gaps — useful for practice, not a prediction of your CLB level. If you're unsure about tone or idea quality, ask a teacher or tutor to read the response as a second check.

Rewrite-once routine

Plan 4–5 minutes (jot 3 points), write for the bulk of the remaining time, then proofread for 2–3 minutes using the checklist above. Repeat this timed loop with a new prompt every practice session. Celpip.me's Academy pairs this checklist with 81 writing lessons, 21 letter and survey templates, and one free mock test to practice against.

FAQ

Is a CELPIP writing checker free to use? There's no official automated checker; the self-check method above is free and works with pen and paper. What's the real difference between Task 1 and Task 2? Task 1 is a 150–200 word email in a given tone; Task 2 is a 150–200 word opinion response choosing between two survey options. Can a checker replace human feedback? No — official scoring is done by trained raters, so use any self-check or AI estimate as a guide, then get a human review when possible.
