CELPIP Speaking Samples: All 8 Tasks Explained With Examples
See what real CELPIP Speaking prompts and strong sample answers look like for all 8 tasks, based on Paragon's official test format and study packs.
- 1.Structure every CELPIP Speaking answer with a clear opening, two developed points, and a closing line so you never trail off when the timer stops.
- 2.Practice Tasks 1 and 7 the most, since both give only 30 seconds to prepare but require a full 90 seconds of speaking.
- 3.Speak at your normal volume during recording, because raters score Listenability and both shouting and mumbling hurt that score.
- 4.For Task 5, remember Part 1 is silent selection only; your speaking and persuading happens in Part 2.
- 5.Record your own practice answers and play them back, since reading sample answers alone will not reveal your filler words or pacing problems.
- 6.Match each of the 8 tasks to its real-world skill (advising, narrating, describing, predicting, persuading, deciding, opining, explaining) so you know which structure to use before the prompt even loads.
CELPIP Speaking samples are practice prompts and model answers built around the test's 8 real tasks, which cover skills like giving advice, telling a personal story, describing a scene, and stating an opinion. The Speaking Test takes about 15 minutes to complete and is the last part of the CELPIP Test. Working through sample prompts for each task — and recording your own timed answers — is the fastest way to learn the rhythm before test day.
What the Speaking Test Actually Looks Like
The test is fully computer-delivered. You read a prompt on screen, get a short preparation window, then speak into a headset microphone while a timer records you — there is no person sitting across from you asking follow-up questions. The 8 tasks cover: giving advice, describing a personal experience, describing a scene, making predictions, comparing and persuading, dealing with a difficult situation, expressing opinions, and describing an unusual situation.
Sample Prompt and Answer Shape: Task 1 (Giving Advice)
A Task 1 prompt typically asks you to help a friend, family member, or colleague make a decision or prepare for something. An official Speaking Pro sample response opens warmly and personally: "Help someone to either make a decision or prepare for something... Hey Mark, I heard um you're interested in um um Sherry. Wow, that's really good to know." Notice the direct, conversational tone — this task rewards sounding like you're actually talking to that person, not delivering a speech.
Sample Prompt and Answer Shape: Task 5 (Comparing and Persuading)
Task 5 has two parts, and mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes candidates make. In Part 1, select an option from two choices. You will not speak in Part 1. In Part 2, persuade someone that your chosen option is better than the one they are... Read and understand the situation. A strong Part 2 answer states the choice immediately, then builds the case, as shown in an official sample: "Well, food court franchise is much better idea than delivery service. First of all, you already know how to cook since you've been cooking food for five years now right?" The answer then adds a second concrete reason before closing — that two-point structure is what separates a organized response from a rambling one.
Sample Prompt and Answer Shape: Task 6 (Dealing With a Difficult Situation)
Task 6 asks you to explain a decision, often to a customer or colleague, and defend it with reasoning. One official sample response walks through a return policy: "she just wore only one times and it is, I guess, it clearly says that is, ah, poor quality... I think this brand has uh some warranties, so we can clearly check with the, double check with the manager. But I believe that we have to provide uh warranty and provide the return for this customer as based on our previous experience." Notice this is not a polished script — it has natural hesitations, and it still communicates a clear decision with reasoning, which is what raters are listening for.
How Sample Answers Are Scored
Every response, from Task 1 to Task 8, is judged on the same four dimensions. Official CELPIP materials describe these as Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability, and Task Fulfillment. Your Speaking result then lines up directly with a Canadian Language Benchmark level, which matters if you're using the score for immigration or citizenship purposes.
How to Use Speaking Samples Without Overconfidence
Reading model answers is a useful first step, but it can create false confidence: you cannot hear your own filler words, flat intonation, or the point where you run out of ideas until you record yourself and listen back. Do that with one task today before moving to the next sample. Celpip.me offers 196 speaking practice questions across all 8 task types plus a free mock test, so you can move from reading samples to recording your own answers under timed conditions.
