CELPIP Score Chart to CLB Conversion: The Official 1-to-1 Table

A CELPIP-General score converts to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level on a direct 1-to-1 basis: your CELPIP score of 7 in Reading equals CLB 7 in Reading, a 9 in Speaking equals CLB 9 in Speaking, and so on for every skill from CLB 4 up to CLB 10+. This mapping comes straight from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada's (IRCC) official language test equivalency chart, and it's the reason CELPIP is often called the "made-for-Canada" test — unlike IELTS or PTE Core, there's no separate score-band table to decode.

How the CELPIP-to-CLB scale works

CELPIP-General reports four separate skill scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — each on its own scale that runs from M (Minimal) up to 12. Listening and Reading scores are calculated from your raw number of correct answers, converted to a scaled score and then mapped to a CELPIP level. Writing and Speaking are scored by trained raters against published performance descriptors for each level. Whichever skill and method, the resulting number lines up directly with the same-numbered CLB level.

CELPIP to CLB conversion table

IRCC's official chart lists CLB levels 4 through 10, and CELPIP scores of 10, 11, and 12 all fall into that same top "CLB 10+" band for immigration and citizenship purposes. A CELPIP score of M means your performance was too low to reliably place on the CLB scale at all.

What CLB level do you actually need?

Because IRCC assesses each of your four skills separately, you need the required CLB level in every skill, not just on average. Common thresholds:

• Federal Skilled Worker Program and Canadian Experience Class (TEER 0/1 jobs): CLB 7 in all four skills.
• Canadian Experience Class (TEER 2/3 jobs): CLB 5 in all four skills.
• Federal Skilled Trades Program: CLB 5 in Listening and Reading, CLB 4 in Writing and Speaking.
• Canadian citizenship applications: CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking only (Reading and Writing are not assessed for citizenship).

Example: if a program requires CLB 7 and you score CELPIP 8, 8, 8, and 6 (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing), you do not meet the requirement — your Writing score of CLB 6 falls short, even though three of your four skills are above the cutoff.

Your CELPIP result stays valid for two years from your test date. If it expires while an Express Entry profile is still active, that profile becomes incomplete and stops entering draws, so track the expiry date against your application timeline.

FAQ

Does my overall CELPIP score determine my CLB level? No. CLB levels are assigned per skill — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking each get their own CLB level based on that skill's CELPIP score. Immigration programs check every skill against the minimum individually.

Is CELPIP-General LS converted the same way? Yes. CELPIP-General LS scores only Listening and Speaking (used for citizenship applications), and those two scores convert to CLB levels the same 1-to-1 way as CELPIP-General.

What does a CELPIP score of M mean for my CLB level? M stands for Minimal and indicates your performance was below CLB 4 — too low to be assigned a specific CLB level. This does not meet the language requirement for any IRCC immigration or citizenship program.
